Paradise Kiss is a shoujo (girls') manga (comic book) series, that is often referred to as 'fashion manga'. It follows the life of a girl in her late teens, Yukari Hayasaka, who is struggling in high school and desperately wants to pass the entrance exams for college to please her overbearing mother. Everything changes though when she runs into Arashi and Isabella, part of the Paradise Kiss clothing design group. They ask her to model for their clothing line in a runway show! Soon after, she meets the other two members of the Paradise Kiss team: Miwako and George. Initially Yukari tries to keep her distance from these Yazawa School for the Arts's "freaks", but she quickly grows to love them, and they become her closest friends. As she gets caught up in a whirlwind of high-fashion and professional modeling, she starts to miss more and more school, and begins questioning her plans for the future. And when Yukari's new friends and boyfriend show her that school isn't everything, she's torn between living the way everyone else wants her to, and doing what she knows is right for her. While Paradise Kiss may just be another typical tale of a teenage girl growing up and finding herself, the touching, unique characters and the intriguingly difficult world of fashion design that makes up the other half of the plot truly set this series apart from the rest.

About Yukari
Yukari Hayasaka (or Caroline/Carrie as the Paradise Kiss group has grown accustomed to calling her) is an 18-year-old senior at Seiei Private Academy. She's spent her entire life trying to do well in school, to no avail, in order to make her mother happy. And now she's studying as hard as she possibly can in hopes that she'll be able to pass the entrance exams to get into a university. In the beginning of the series, she has a secret crush on her classmate, Hiroyuki Tokumori, but that begins to change once she meets George Koizumi. It all starts when Arashi and Isabella scout Yukari to model in their senior fashion show, and she eventually agrees. It's not long before before she becomes good friends with the Paradise Kiss group, starts looking for other modeling jobs, and decides that school isn't exactly as important as she thought it was.
Joji Koizumi
About Joji
Joji Koizumi (or George, as he insists on being called in his attempt to look like a westerner) is the undeniably handsome, suave, bisexual leader of the Paradise Kiss group, and master of clothing design. For most fans, he's the guy you hate to love (although for some, I suppose, just the same, the guy you love to hate). With a lush for a mother and an adulterer as a father, it's no surprise that George is a tad screwed up. Cocky, confidant, and very confusing, George already gets everything material he could ever possibly want from his dad (somewhat of a bribe to keep his affair with George's mother secret) and has no trouble convincing other people around him to give him anything else he desires. George has been creating clothing since elementary school with the help of Isabella (and more recently, the rest of the Paradise Kiss group) and would love nothing more than to win the Senior Fashion Show. And he's decided that he needs Yukari to model his creation for the show in order to win first prize.
Miwako Sakurada
About Miwako
Miwako Sakurada is the bubbly, pink-haired girlfriend of Arashi (and quickly becomes best friend to Yukari). Like the rest of the Paradise Kiss group, she attends Yazawa Arts School to study Fashion Design. But her skills are usually overshadowed by George's or her older sister, Mikako Kouda's, accomplishments. Her sister (or Sissy, as Miwako calls her) has a successful clothing line, 'Happy Berry', and was responsible for getting Caroline her first real modeling job. Miwako is a pushover and is very non-confrontational, she's eager to please and incredibly loyal. While her cheery and carefree attitude make her seem like a ditz, Miwako is still a very intelligent and observant girl. Just like Yukari, she feels insecure and doubtful about her future, when it comes to her career and matters of love.
Arashi Nagase
About Arashi
Arashi Nagase goes to Yazawa Arts like everyone else from Paradise Kiss, but he's also a guitarist in his punk band. He's Miwako's boyfriend, and he can get pretty jealous. His difficulty with communication often creates problems and misunderstandings with those around him, and his abrasive personality clearly comes out to put a distance between him and those he loves. Arashi is kind of a badass, but he can be very sweet.
Isabella
About Isabella
Isabella (whose real name isn't known) is kind of the 'mother hen' of the group. Except... she's a he. Basically, Isabella is a transvestive who aspires to be a pattern designer and is really good at cooking. Isabelle's admiration and affection for George, who helped her discover her true self, makes them perhaps the closest pair in the group, even though it's hard to see at times.
Hiroyuki Tokumori
About Hiroyuki
Hiroyuki Tokumori (Arashi and Miwako call him Hiro) was Yukari's crush from Seiei Academy. When he was younger, he was best friends with Arashi and Miwako. He's the most concerned about Caroline's future out of all of her friends, and is somewhat torn between his residual unrequited feelings for Miwako and his growing feelings for Yukari.
